The History
Founded in 1989, Carolina Crown has been one of the longest-tenured organizations in drum corps history. During its time in the competition, Executive Director Kevin Smith served as both interim and full-time director, guiding the organization through its first DCI World Championship title in 1993 and moving it up through Division II to World Class with continued growth and competitive success.
A few years back, the corps started a non-profit organization called CrownCARES to funnel the talent and dedication found in drum corps into places beyond the music community. The goal is to improve lives and communities across the nation. In 2015, Crown relocated its annual NightBEAT DCI Tour event to Winston-Salem and began partnering with Forsyth County Band Programs and Samaritan Ministries. Through this initiative, they are able to help young people develop lifelong excellence in the performing arts. Their mission is to inspire youth to achieve their potential through a superior and challenging performing arts education experience.
The Performance
DCI – Charlotte is one of the top drum and bugle corps in the country. The organization is known for hosting the annual DCI World Championships in mid-August, a 20-day run of events featuring top talent from across the United States and Canada. The competitions are governed by DCI, which is an acronym for Drum Corps International.
DCI has a lot of fun promoting its members through the use of technology, social media, and marketing. The Members

The group has a long and proud history of developing lifelong excellence in young people, which is evident in its many accolades, performances, and accomplishments.
In 1989, Kevin Smith was amongst the founding members of Carolina Crown and has served as its executive director ever since. During his tenure, the organization has seen a lot of changes in the drum corps world, but it always managed to survive and thrive through them. He led the group through its first DCI World Championship title in 1993 as a Division II unit, and then up to DCI’s World Class division with years of growth and competitive success. He did all of this while raising a family and working a nine-to-five job, making him one of the most enduring directors in DCI history.
